Encouraging, Equipping and Exemplifying positive transformation in young women in this highly sexualized society.
THE MYM PHILOSOPHY
In 2013, Antonia "Neet" Childs founded MYM in response to the overwhelming need for services by youth who were experiencing, or at risk for commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST); and because those minors felt they were being ignored by traditional social services agencies. While the Mecklenburg County child welfare system attempts to serve these victims, too often they are ill-equipped to meet the unique needs of CSE and DMST survivors.
MYM, the only survivor-led service provider in North Carolina, has first-hand knowledge of the struggles that survivors face, and the unique series of supports they require. There are no other organizations, programs or facilities in the Southeast offering comprehensive services that exclusively focus on Holistic Case Management, Education and Training as a Survivor Leader (evidenced based program), Individual and Group Mentoring, Emotional Support, and referrals to other services as needed.
MYM is not only committed to working with the existing child welfare system to move from a reactive stance to a proactive approach, but to providing survivors with the educational, emotional, and psychological resources necessary to build a new life. Our philosophy is to treat survivors of CSEC and DMST not as victims, but as displaced entrepreneurs, our protégés, preparing to become emerging leaders of tomorrow. Ms. Childs has worked with over 200 survivors of CSE using this model.
